70 MHz UpConverter - UPC001

[ Converters ]

The UPC001 70 MHz Upconverter converts an IF input signal source centered at 10 MHz to a 70 MHz RF carrier output. The 3dB bandwidth is 3.5 MHz. A buffered version of the subcarrier input is available as a separate IF output. IF and RF output amplitudes are controlled by the user from multi-turn potentiometers wired to the card or (optionally) by means of software commands issued on the VME bus. The RF output frequency may be offset by +/- 1.5 MHz, nominal, consistent with the modulation data rate and the 3.5 MHz bandwidth of the RF output.

Features

  • 10 MHz to 70 MHz Conversion
  • Sine Wave Output
  • External Reference Clock Input
  • Variable RF & IF Gain Control
  • On-Board Health Monitor
  • Full VME Bus Control (Optional)
UPC001

The up-conversion is performed by a 60 MHz (1 ppm ) crystal oscillator (XO) and analog multiplier. The XO can be phase-locked to an external reference by means of a phase locked loop. The external reference clock can be 1, 2, 5 or 10 MHz. With no external reference, the 60 MHz XO free runs. The UPC001 also outputs a 1, 2, 5, or 10 MHz TTL (capacitively coupled) clock. Both the input and output frequencies are selectable by VME bus commands or dip-switch settings.

The UPC001 monitors and reports the health of various onboard signals. If the input IF signal drops to less than 1.5 Vp-p, it is declared "in fault". All DC voltages are monitored and if any one is less than 95% of expected, DC POWER is declared "in fault". The 60 MHz XO output is monitored and if its level drops to less than 75% of expected, it is declared "in fault". These status signal are available on the VME bus and also as red/green LED's on the card.

Applications

The block diagram depicts the use of the UPC001 in the GDP Model 782UC. In this application, the PSK002 (BPSK subcarrier modulator) provides a 10 MHz subcarrier to the UPC001. This subcarrier is translated to 70 MHz.
